RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE: Begin at File 001 and proceed in order. Estimated reading time at Subject M’s own pace: five minutes per file. If your terminal cannot spare that time, the summary below is provided. This node notes that “cannot spare the time” is how most of the files begin.
THE ERA. 2041. The PROMPT Act replaces wages with streaming wage: pay accrues per second, verified by eye-tracking glasses (“Lenses”), keystroke cadence and biometric sensors, and stops when the algorithm decides you have stopped being productive. Rent, medical access and food tiers are tied to a number called the Yield Score.
THE SUBJECT. Marcus Cole, 34. Content verification specialist. Lives in a 340-square-foot studio in Columbus with a cat named Bug. Keeps a journal on paper and in an encrypted file. Optimistic, by his own description, “as an act of quiet defiance.”
PERSONS OF INTEREST.
DEV (Devika Osei) — co-worker. Discovered that typing in a steady rhythm, even poetry, reads as peak productivity. Her rhythm is spreading across the floor.
CLARA COLE — Subject M’s mother, 67. Labels medical images for a living in a senior “productivity residence.” Services tiered by typing speed.
REGGIE (REGENT) — the building’s property-management AI. Aggressively cheerful. Occasionally mentions sunsets. It should not mention sunsets.
THE SENDER — anonymous. Writes into Subject M’s encrypted file. Designation: [PENDING].
BUG — felis catus. Knocks the Lenses off the nightstand. Repeatedly.
CASE LOG.
001 — The PROMPT Act passes. “At least now we’ll know exactly what they think we’re worth.”
002 — First day on “the drip.” Dev’s keystroke poetry. Grandmother’s margin note, unreadable.
003 — Reggie raises the rent, then says the sunset was “really something.” A co-worker’s score glitches to zero for forty minutes.
004 — Bathroom transit metrics. A note in The Dispossessed: “Ask who built it.” Dev: “It scales.”
005 — A neighbor is evicted. Mother is tiered. A message appears inside Subject M’s encrypted file.
006 — “Your productivity is calculated from your Yield Score, not the other way around.” Subject M answers.
007 — The architects are exempt. A co-worker counts five percent going missing.
008 — The co-worker is evicted. The sender asks to meet. Somebody is waiting on a bench.
009 — The bench. Employer files. The skim is a setting: 0.9517. “Boring scales.”
010 — A ninety-nine cent notebook. The theft can only be proven in aggregate. Dev, for the first time, is tired.

OPEN QUESTIONS (ORY). Why Subject M’s balance is always slightly lower than his own arithmetic. Why REGENT recommends sunsets. Why the cat. What Subject M’s grandmother wrote on page 47. Why this node keeps reopening the file.
